Two home tournaments highlight the Ely American Legion baseball team's 2013 schedule, which was released today.
Post 248, which was both the state and Central Plains Regional runner-up last year and picked up a program-record 32 wins, will host both eight and 10-team tournaments at Veterans Memorial Field this summer.
The DQ Grill and Chill Classic, now in its 26th year, is set for June 21-23 and is part of the first-ever Ely Legion Baseball Alumni Weekend. Minnetonka, Foley and Roseau are among the teams who will compete in the eight-team event.
Three weeks later, Ely hosts the annual Sir G's Midsummer Classic. The 10-team tournament will feature a rematch of last year's Central Plains title game as Wahpeton (N.D.) will take on Post 248 on Saturday, July 13. Other notable teams in the event set for July 12-14 include Viroqua (Wis.), Kenyon, Duluth Lakeview, Edina, Deer River and Cloquet.
Ely has won three consecutive Eighth District titles and has played in the state tournament 11 times in the last 16 seasons. Post 248 will defend that crown in late-July during the Eighth District Division II Playoffs at Chisholm.
