Ely has top seed; pairings set for Division II Legion playoffs

The road to Dilworth goes through Ely, at least for the Division II baseball teams in Minnesota's Eighth District.

Ely has the number-one seed and home field advantage for the district playoffs, which start Tuesday night with three opening round games. The bulk of the tournament will be played at Ely's Veterans Memorial Field, including Sunday's title tilt, set for 4 p.m. with a second game to follow if necessary.

After a surprising run through the regular season, Ely has an 18-5 overall record and secured the number-one seed by winning 11 district games, two games more than anyone in the district. The hosts have a first-round bye and will open tournament play at 8 p.m. Wednesday, against either Brookston or Cook County.

Whoever survives the weeklong, seven-team, double-elimination grind will win a trip to the Division II State Tournament, set for July 30-Aug. 1 at Dilworth, located in western Minnesota just outside of Moorhead.  Ely has qualified for the state tournament in eight of the last 13 seasons.
