A victory over Minnesota's top-ranked Division II team was part of a productive southern trip, which included three wins in four games for Ely's American Legion baseball team.
Senior-to-be Louie Gerzin struck out 13 batters and allowed only two hits as Ely upset BOLD 3-2 Thursday night in Bird Island. The win came just 10 days after BOLD captured the high school Class A state title, and the Mudhens were ranked first in the Division II state rankings.
While Ely fell 6-2 at Cannon Falls the following night, Ely rebounded Saturday with two wins at Jordan's Mini Met. Will Gustafson tossed a complete-game four-hitter as Ely edged host Jordan 4-3, and a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth gave Post 248 a 9-6 victory over southern powerhouse Kenyon.
Bradley Roy drove in four runs, including two on a sixth-inning squeeze bunt, while Trevor Bernsdorf didn't give up an earned run while pitching a six-hitter with six strikeouts.
Nick Mathews, one of four college freshmen for Post 248, swung the hottest bat of the weekend and went nine-for-11 at the plate, with at least two hits in all four games. Trevor Bernsdorf had six hits during the southern swing as Ely, ranked eighth in Division II, improved to 10-6 overall.
The pitching performance of the weekend belonged to Gerzin, who struck out the side in three different innings and faced just three batters more than the minimum against BOLD.
Ely scraped together just enough offense, with Bobby Shusta lining a run-scoring hit and Mathews finishing with two hits and a run batted in.

Ely goes 3-1, takes second in DQ Classic
One bad inning cost Ely a four-game sweep in the DQ Grill and Chill Classic.
Virginia scored four runs in the top of the fifth, with Kyle Maki's bases-clearing double the key blow, and the visitors rallied for a 7-5 victory in the Sunday finale of the eight-team tournament held at Veterans Memorial Field.
Earlier wins over Minnetonka, Brookston and Roseau assured Post 248 of a second-place finish in a tournament won by Foley, which was a perfect 4-0.
Ely's chance at perfection was spoiled by Virginia, which scored all four fifth-inning runs with two outs. Virginia added an insurance run in the seventh and Seth Holmes earned the save by coaxing a double-play ball after Ely put runners at first and second.
Max Gantt's two-run single in the fourth had given Ely a 4-2 lead, and Pat Huisman added a run-scoring double in the same inning. Both Gantt and Sean Fisher had two hits for the hosts, while Bobby Shusta was tagged with the loss on the mound.
Saturday night, Trevor Bernsdorf held Roseau to two hits and Fisher had a bases-clearing double in the third as Ely pulled away for an 11-3 victory.
Leadoff man Cody Bialik scored twice while Fisher, hitting in the number-two hole, ripped two doubles. Louie Gerzin also had two hits to back the pitching of Bernsdorf, who did not give up an earned run.
In earlier action Saturday, Will Gustafson blanked Brookston while tossing a five-hitter in a 6-0 Ely victory. Huisman had two doubles and drove in a run, while both Riley Bernsdorf and Fisher had two hits.
Bialik, who is hitting a team-high .480 and has an on-base percentage of nearly .700, went three-for-four with three runs scored.
In other games Sunday, Roseau rallied for a 5-4, nine-inning win over Hibbing and Foley clinched the DQ Classic title by blasting Minnetonka 10-1.
Final tournament standings were:
Foley 4-0

DQ Classic, first-ever alumni game coming up this weekend
Now a quarter-century old, Ely's DQ Grill and Chill Classic will mark its birthday this weekend with a celebration of the community's rich American Legion baseball history.
In addition to the eight-team tournament, which starts Friday at Veterans Memorial Field, the weekend will also include what's believed to be the first-ever Ely Legion baseball alumni game.
The alumni game, tentatively set to involve about 20 former Ely Legion players including recent standouts Wes Snyder, Alex Koschak, Nick Pecha, Tyler Blomberg and Ben Povhe, is slated for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The tournament, meanwhile, includes two four-team pools with each team also playing one “crossover” game against an opponent from the opposite pool.
Host Ely is joined by Roseau, Minnetonka and Brookston in its division, while the other division is made up of Foley, Taconite, Virginia and Hibbing. Roseau is coached by Ely alumni Josh Weckman, a top pitcher for a 2004 Ely team that went 28-2 and finished second in the state.
