Legion splits at Cook County, falls to Deer River

Two lengthy road trips in as many days proved to be difficult for Ely's Legion baseball team.

Post 248 split at Cook County on Tuesday, and couldn't stop powerful Deer River on Wednesday.

Deer River erupted for four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth in a 15-5, five-inning district win. Ely beat Cook County 13-1 in Tuesday's opener but lost 8-3 in the finale.

Four Ely errors set the table for Deer River (8-2), and the hosts followed with a hitting display against pitchers Trevor Bernsdorf and Nick Mathews.

Jack Carter had two hits and three runs batted in for the winners, and Eythan Stangland added a pair of triples.

Ely was paced at the plate by Riley Bernsdorf, who had two hits and drove in a run. Trevor Bernsdorf and Wes Snyder had run-scoring doubles.

Alex Koschak held Cook County to four hits the day before, and he was backed by an Ely offense that ripped out 13 hits in the first game of the twinbill at Grand Marais.

Sean Fisher was three-for-three with three runs scored, and Trevor Bernsdorf had two hits. Jory Johnson also added a pair of hits.

Cook County scored five times in the second inning of the nightcap, then held off several Ely run-scoring opportunities. Post 248 stranded 11 runners in the contest, most in scoring position.

Koschak went three-for-three at the plate for Ely.
