Ely takes care of Chisholm in five

A six-run outburst in the top of the second sent Ely Post 248 on its way on Thursday night. The American Legion baseball team won 11-1 at Chisholm, in five innings, to improve to 12-3 for the season.

Already leading 3-0 after one frame, Ely put the Eighth District Division II contest away by sending 10 batters to the plate in the top of the second, scoring six times with the aid of four walks and two errors.

That was more than enough cushion for winning pitcher Greg Helget, who tossed four innings of two-hit ball, with Wes Snyder coming on for a scoreless fifth.

At the plate, Riley Bernsdorf went two-for-three with three runs batted in while Nick Mathews had a run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly. Both Sean Fisher and Trevor Bernsdorf scored three runs.

Earlier, Ely's VFW baseball team opened the doubleheader with a 12-6 win over Chisholm. Louie Gerzin had three hits, Riley Bernsdorf scored four runs and Pat Huisman had two hits and two RBI. Bradley Roy picked up the pitching win as the VFW improved to 13-1.
