VFW wins twice in Subdistricts, plays Sunday for top seed

A pair of wins on Saturday got Ely's VFW baseball team into next weekend's district playoffs, and one more win will earn Post 2717 a number-one seed.

Ely rode the pitching of Max Gantt and Louie Gerzin to easy wins over Deer River and Grand Rapids in the North Subdistrict Tournament at Veterans Memorial Field.

Gantt was on the hill in the opener as Ely erupted for nine fifth-inning runs in a 10-0, six-inning decision over Deer River. Ely later beat Grand Rapids 11-1 in six, with Gerzin earning the victory.

Ely (23-5) takes on International Falls (23-3) at 7 p.m. Sunday, with the winner gaining the top seed out of the north for the Eighth District Tournament, which starts July 28 at Duluth and Hermantown.

International Falls beat Virginia 10-0 and Eveleth 15-5 to move on.

Sunday's games at Ely include two contests with district berths on the line. Eveleth faces Chisholm at 11:30 a.m. while Grand Rapids and Hibbing square off at 2 p.m.  Both winners advance to districts while the losers are done for the year.
