Virginia, Deer River early winners in Sir G's Classic

A mid-afternoon thunderstorm caused a nearly one-hour delay, but action has resumed in the Sir G's Midsummer Classic and three games have been completed.

Virginia edged Hermantown 4-3 while Duluth Lakeview and Cloquet played to a 5-5, nine-inning tie in early games at Veterans Memorial Field.  After brief but heavy rains, Deer River and Kenyon resumed play and Deer River pulled out a 9-5 win.

The Lakeview-Viroqua (Wis.) game started at 6:40 pm, with Ely and St. Paul Arcade-Phalen slated for a 9:10 pm start.

Friday's matchup between Hermantown and Deer River at Soudan was postponed and will be played at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, at Soudan.
