Snyder fans 16, blanks Brookston to open playoffs

Wes Snyder sent Ely into the winners' bracket of the Eighth District Division II Legion Baseball Playoffs with perhaps his most dominant effort yet on the mound.

The senior left-hander struck out a career-high 16 batters, took a no-hitter into the seventh and finished with a one-hitter as Post 248 blanked Brookston 6-0 before a Veterans Night crowd at Veterans Memorial Field.

Ely (23-6) broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and Snyder was never tested by the eighth-seeded visitors.

Snyder retired the first 11 batters he faced and pitched to just 24 hitters in the contest, closing the game with back-to-back strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Bryce Karppinen was equally brilliant early on, but Post 248 got to the college freshman in the fourth, with Jory Johnson and Cody Bialik drawing bases-loaded walks and Sean Fisher lining a two-run single to center.

Ely, which moves on to meet Chisholm Wednesday, added two more runs in the fifth on three walks and a run-scoring hit by Louie Gerzin.

Nick Mathews scored twice for the winners, who managed just five hits against Karppinen.

In other first round games:
• Deer River 4, Moose Lake 0;
• Taconite 3, Carlton 0;
• Chisholm 9, Esko 3.

The stage is now set for Wednesday's winners bracket games, with Deer River and Taconite squaring off at 5 p.m., and Ely taking on Chisholm at 7:30. It's Pack the Park night at the ballpark, with all tickets $2, and concession stand specials including 2 hot dogs for $2, $2 burgers and $2 root beer floats.
