Virginia took advantage of four Ely errors and scored six unearned runs to post an 8-4 win Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Sir G's Midsummer Classic.
Winning pitcher Jeremy Paschke and Patrick Anderson combined on a seven-hitter and the visitors took control of the game with a four-run fourth inning. An infield hit and back-to-back errors in the infield set the table, and Paschke delivered the key blow: a two-run triple to left-center.
Ely (18-5) closed the gap to 6-4 in the fifth on Louie Gerzin's run-scoring single, but Virginia (7-8) countered with two in the sixth, with the aid of one Ely error, against losing pitcher Riley Bernsdorf.
Paschke had two hits and three RBI for the winners, who went 3-1 in the tournament and took third out of nine teams.
Gerzin, Cody Bialik and Trevor Bernsdorf all had two hits for Ely, which returns to action Tuesday night with a key Eighth District clash at Deer River.
Deer River claimed second place in the tournament with a 7-6 win over Cloquet, while the tournament championship went to Viroqua (Wis.), which erased a 3-0 deficit in the seventh and beat St. Paul Arcade-Phalen earlier in the day.
