One of the premiere American Legion baseball tournaments in Minnesota gets underway in just over a week in Ely: the 2012 Sir G's Midsummer Classic slated for July 13-15.
A loaded field includes a Sir G's-record 10 teams, split between two five-team divisions. Defending champion Duluth Lakeview will face stiff competition in its bid to repeat, facing host Ely (11-3), Wisconsin Division II powerhouse Viroqua (Wis.), Cloquet and Roseville East in the Red Divison.
On the other side of the draw in the Blue Division are Kenyon, Hermantown, West Duluth, Virginia and Deer River. The teams will play 20 games over three days, including 14 at Ely's historic Veterans Memorial Field.
