Nick Mathews picked the perfect time for his first home run of the season.
The senior second baseman's two-run blast over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the eighth gave Ely a dramatic 9-8 victory over defending champion Duluth Lakeview Saturday afternooon in the Sir G's Midsummer Classic.
A see saw battle that included three ties and five lead changes finally tilted the way of Post 248 at the very end. Mathews' bomb off of reliever Doug Lewis gave the hosts a 2-0 record in the nine-team tournament, an 18-3 mark on the season and extended the club's winning streak to a season-high nine games.
The contest also featured three home runs by the winners. Trevor Bernsdorf's solo shot in the first gave Ely a 1-0 lead and Wes Snyder tied the contest at six in the bottom of the sixth with a towering shot to center.
After Lakeview grabbed a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh, Ely tied it with Greg Helget's two-out single, which plated Jory Johnson.
Lakeview scored once in the eighth on a Noah Tapper single, but that set the stage for the bottom half of the frame. Sean Fisher worked a walk to lead off the inning, and Mathews came up with his home run after Lews retired both Trevor and Riley Bernsdorf.
Mathews finished three-for-five at the plate, Trevor Bernsdorf had two hits and two runs batted in, and Fisher scored three runs.
Snyder went the distance and struck out a season-high 15 batters to get the pitching win. He scattered 11 hits, including three by Lakeview's Justin Smith.
Ely continues play tonight against Viroqua (Wis.), at 7:30 p.m.
