A revved-up Taconite team never let up on Ely Post 248 Friday night and advanced to Sunday's district title game with an 11-2 win over the host team.
Winning pitcher Alex Troumbly kept Ely (24-7) off balance while the Taconite offense pounced with two-run innings in the first, fourth and fifth frames, and put the game away with a five-run outburst in the sixth.
Taconite (19-8), which was the district runner-up last year, now needs just one more win to secure the district title while Ely needs to win three in a row to claim its third consecutive district crown.
Ely takes on either Carlton or Deer River at 7:30 Saturday night, with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship series.
Derek Bundy went four-for-four at the plate with two runs bated in to pace the Taconite offense, which was aided by four Ely errors. Josh Gross, Derek Fink and Riley Savalianen added two hits apiece for the winners.
Troumbly, meanwhile, held Ely to four hits in five and two-thirds innings before giving way to reliever David Zilbert.
Taconite finished with 13 hits against three Ely pitchers, with Wes Snyder tagged with the loss and both Trevor Bernsdorf and Will Gustafson working in relief.
