Ely's American Legion baseball team ran its winning streak to five games Monday night, easily disposing of a young Cook County team in a pair of contests shortened by the 10-run rule.
Seniors Sean Fisher and Wes Snyder both hit three-run homers as Post 248 cruised to a 15-5, six-inning, opening-game win at Veterans Memorial Field. Jory Johnson held Cook County to two hits in the nightcap in an 11-1, five-inning Ely rout.
Ely (14-3) ran its Eighth District record to a league-leading 9-1 with the sweep.
Fisher's first career Legion homer helped put the game out of reach and Snyder's blast came during a five-run fifth inning. Trevor Bernsdorf had three hits and drove in two runs in the opener while Cody Bialik had a pair of bunt singles.
That helped winning pitcher Jared Poderzay, who overcame seven walks to pick up his third win of the summer.
Johnson notched his first win while dominating the second game, recording nine strikeouts. Riley Bernsdorf drove in three runs while Johnson had two hits and two runs batted in.
Ely is back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Taconite, capping off a tripleheader at Veterans Memorial Field that starts with an Eveleth-Ely VFW twinbill at 3 p.m.
