A seventh-inning rally gave Ely's VFW baseball team a subdistrict championship and a top seed for next weekend's district playoffs.
Trailing 4-2 going into the 7th, Post 2717 erupted for six runs and knocked off International Falls 8-4 at Veterans Memorial Field.
Ely (24-5) will be seeded first out of the north when the Eighth District Tournament gets underway next Saturday in Duluth.
An infield single by Riley Bernsdorf and a double by Louie Gerzin started Ely's Sunday night comeback, and the rally continued against I-Falls ace Ben Humbert, who came on in relief. Will Gustafson's single to right was the key blow, and Ely scored one run on a wild pitch and another when a third strike got away from the catcher. Jeff Willis added a run-scoring hit to help cap off the comeback.
Bernsdorf went the distance to get the win, as Ely finished off a 3-0 weekend in subdistrict play.
Ely, International Falls, Eveleth and Grand Rapids will all represent the north in the district tournament, an eight-team event that runs from July 27-30.
