After spotting Taconite a 3-1 lead, Ely scored seven unaswered runs Tuesday night and rode the pitching of Wes Snyder to an 8-3 Eighth District win at Veterans Memorial Field.
Snyder gave up three runs in the first three frames but settled in after that, finishing with a four-hitter and a season-high 12 strikeouts as Post 248 improved to 15-3 overall and 10-1 in district games.
Nick Mathews' run-scoring double, the first of his three hits, tied the game at three in the bottom of the third while Greg Helget delivered a fourth-inning double that plated Snyder and put the hosts in front to stay.
Louie Gerzin knocked in runs in both the fifth and sixth frames and Snyder added a two-run double in the sixth for good measure.
Earlier Tuesday, Gerzin blanked Eveleth on four hits as Ely won 1-0 in VFW action. Gerzin, a junior-to-be, recorded 11 strikeouts as Post 2717 inched closer to a number-one seed for the upcoming North Subdistrict Playoffs.
