A masterful pitching performance by Trevor Bernsdorf pushed Ely's American Legion baseball team into the district championship game.
The righthander blanked Deer River 4-0, tossing a five-hitter and issuing no walks in the complete game effort as Post 248 improved to 25-7 and set up a district title game rematch with Taconite, set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Memorial Field.
Bernsdorf, a senior-to-be, issued no walks and didn't strike out a batter. He was aided by an Ely defense that made no errors.
Post 248 got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the fourth, as Jory Johnson's two-run double to left got the hosts on the board. Wes Snyder followed with a run-scoring hit to right.
In the sixth, Ely tacked on one more as Jared Poderzay singled to right to drive in Nick Mathews.
Ely finished with seven hits, but no starter got more than one.
The two-time defending district champions need a win in Sunday's first game to set up a decisive second contest for the district title. A Taconite win in game one ends the tournament.
