Ely's American Legion baseball team will have to wait at least one more night to clinch the top seed for the upcoming district playoffs.
A 4-0 lead went by the wayside on Wednesday, and Taconite rallied for a 6-4 decision that spoiled Post 248's chance to wrap up the Eighth District Division II regular season title.
Back-to-back three-run innings did Ely in, as the hosts scored three unearned runs in the third and took the lead the following inning on Alex Troumbly's two-run double. That was enough for winning pitcher Jordan Peratalo, who mowed down 12 straight batters before Ely got two hits and stranded a pair of runners in the seventh.
Riley Bernsdorf went three-for-four at the plate for Ely while his brother Trevor added two hits. Cody Bialik also finished with two hits while Louie Gerzin had a double and two runs batted in.
Will Gustafson was tagged with the pitching loss, working four innings before giving way to Trevor Bernsdorf, who tossed two innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
Ely (19-6) hosts Carlton at 6 p.m. Thursday and can secure the regular season title and the top playoff seed with a victory.
