Ely beats Deer River, inches closer to top seed

A key road win on Tuesday night moved Ely's American Legion baseball team a step closer to the top seed in next week's district playoffs.

Louie Gerzin went three-for-three with four runs scored and Greg Helget tossed a complete-game eight-hitter as Ely won 9-5 at Deer River.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak and Ely improved to 19-5 overall, and 12-1 in Eighth District games. Just one more win in the final three regular season games will give Post 248 the number-one seed for the district tournament, which starts July 24 at Ely.

Ely scored in five of seven innings and chased Deer River ace lefty Eythan Stangland after three frames.

Leading 3-1, Post 248 put the game away with a four-run fifth inning, wiht Nick Mathews lacin ga run-scoring double and Jory Johnson adding a two-run single.

Wes Snyder finished with two hits, including a triple, and had two runs batted in.

Helget, meanwhile, picked up his fourth win of the summer while going the distance. He allowed three runs, just one earned, through six innings before Deer River (14-6) nicked him for two more in the seventh.

Ely can clinch the Eighth District regular season title outright with a win Wednesday at Marble, against Taconite. Home games with Carlton and Chisholm follow Thursday and Friday.
