Ely recorded its second shutout in as many nights in the Eighth District Division II Legion baseball playoffs, as senior Greg Helget tossed a two-hitter in Wednesday's 3-0 winners bracket decision over Chisholm.
Helget never allowed a Chisholm runner past second base, and Post 248 (24-6) finally broke through against junkballer Randy Bandelow by pushing across three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
A walk to Helget and singles by Cody Bialik and Sean Fisher loaded the bases with no outs, and Trevor Bernsdorf broke the deadlock when he was hit by a pitch, bringing home courtesy runner Bobby Shusta. A sacrifice fly by Nick Mathews and a run-scoring groundout by Louie Gerzin gave Ely added insurance.
Helget didn't need it, as he retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve his fifth win of the summer. The righthander fanned five batters and walked only three.
Ely managed just four hits and struck out four times against Bandelow.
With the win, Ely moves on to a Friday night matchup against Taconite (18-8) in a meeting of the tournament's last two unbeaten teams. Taconite scored three runs in the top of the seventh to beat Deer River 7-5 in Wednesday's first game.
